Listening is the whole idea.
Voices of a Lifetime is a documentary-style interview project built around one simple belief: older adults have lived through things worth hearing, and they should be asked.
It started with one family's stories.
Voices of a Lifetime was created from a genuine interest in hearing the stories of people who have lived through different periods of life and have wisdom to offer younger generations.
The inspiration came from hearing the stories of the founder's great-grandmother and feeling drawn to learn more about the experiences, memories and lessons older people carry.
What began as listening within one family became a project built to do the same thing carefully, respectfully and on the record.
The project began with the kind of conversation that happens in an ordinary living room.
To help older adults feel heard and to keep what they say.
Participants decide what belongs in their story and what stays private.
A meaningful opportunity to tell your story.
The mission of Voices of a Lifetime is to help older adults and seniors feel heard, and to give them a meaningful opportunity to tell their stories in their own words.
For participants
The project offers a place to reflect, to reminisce, to share what has been experienced, and to preserve memories that matter before they are lost.
For families and future generations
The stories may inspire, educate and help people understand the lives and experiences of those who came before them in ways a transcript cannot capture.
Experience is a kind of knowledge that only time can give.
Older adults and seniors often carry wisdom and life experience that younger people have not yet had the chance to gain. They have seen decisions play out over decades. They know how a hard season ends, how a family changes, how lessons are learned through experience, and how a country feels when it is changing.
That perspective can easily be lost and cannot be recreated. This project exists to preserve it while older adults and seniors are still able to share their experiences in their own words.
